Parts

POWER SUPPLY PART WARRANTY

Same as the power supply part vendor's warranty to PCR. Usually 1 - 5 years. If the vendor of the power supply provides a FREE replacement power supply under warranty then those savings are passed right back to you. You must pay for reimbursement of any shipping charges (plus tax if any) that may occur, particularly the cost to ship the failed part back to the vendor (RMA shipping), all simply billed as "reimbursement".

There is no warranty covering other parts.  Vendor warranties do not cover other parts. Power supplies are supposed to protect other parts (such as motherboard, RAM, hard drive, etc) but there is no guarantee and no warranty as such even if you are using a surge protector. More expensive power supplies are more likely to protect other parts particularly the motherboard.

YOUR QUESTION: Do you take apart and repair failed power supplies? No. Power supplies are considered "field replaceable units", meaning when they fail, you throw the whole power supply away and get a whole new one. It should be noted that power supplies hold LETHAL AMOUNTS of electrical charges (inside capacitors) even long AFTER they are physically disconnected from a power outlet!!! NEVER EVER open up a power supply or poke a screw driver inside one!!!! Power supplies can KILL you even when disconnected!!!!

YOUR QUESTION: Should I just buy the cheapest power supply? NO! Do NOT skimp on power supplies! Power supplies are perhaps the most overlooked computer parts. Sometimes you too often you get what you pay for with cheap $25 - $30 power supplies, which typically carry just a 1 year warranty. You might get lucky with a cheap power supply that lasts forever. However cheap power supplies are much more likely to fail within a year or two AND may even take your motherboard with it! Then it really becomes a costly mistake! The manufacturer's warranty and PCR's labor warranty applies to the power supply only! More expensive power supplies (perhaps $70 ones) often come with 5-year warranties because they are built to last, and they are much more likely to protect the other parts on your computer. This is why it is strongly recommend that you consider more expensive power supplies, or at least a power supply in the $40 range. The manufacturer's warranty length is usually a good indicator of the quality of the power supply. Again PCR does not profit off of parts.  You pay for "reimbursement" only.
