Do you have critical data on your computer that is not backed up to a secondary media?
Music MP3's? Word documents? Tax documents? Photos? Emails? Browser bookmarks? Product keys?
How sure are you that your data is safe? Sometimes customers improperly back up or improperly recover their data, and this essentially results in data loss. This is one more reason why it is important to create at least 2 backups to different mediums.
Step ONE of any repair is to verify that you have backed up any critical personal data to a secondary drive (preferably TWO safety backups for a total of 3 copies). You are encouraged to visit this page for help on backing up your data prior to bringing your product in. It is equally important that you also verify the integrity of your backups.
PCR takes various precautions including using an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to protect against power failure during servicing, and by error checking backup drives. If requested PCR can back up your data for an applicable fee.
SERVICE ORDER AGREEMENT
You, the customer, agree that you must back up your data, software, information and/or files. You agree that whether or not you request PCR to back up any data, software, information or other files stored on your product, in no event shall PCR and/or its repair tech be liable under any circumstances for any loss, alteration or corruption of any data, software, information, files, or loss of any other media from your product.
Note that most computer repair businesses have a similar clause on their service order forms that the customer must sign off on before work is performed. No matter how skilled and careful a tech may be, there can be unavoidable events such as a hard drive firmware module or logical volume manager failure or corruption, etc.
What do the other guys' agreements look like?
The
service order agreement includes this clause:
Here's what the Mac Store's disclaimer looks like:
YOUR QUESTION: I have not backed up my critical data. Should I have it backed up? What are the risks? The main risk is that hard drives eventually fail and can fail at any time. Statistically 1 out of 12 drives fail in the first 2 years. After that there is an 8% annual failure rate. If your hard drive stops working due to physical failure, the cost to recover data at high tech recovery labs typically ranges from $1,500 to $3,000.
Also keep in mind that you may THINK that you properly backed up your data BUT you might have improperly backed it up, or you may accidentally delete your own data later, or the backup process itself may fail. It has been reported that Carbonite lost 7,500 people's data in 2009. The "perfect storm" can wipe out all of your data. This is why experts say that you should have at least two safety backups of your critical personal data, each stored at different locations. That's 3 copies in total.

EXAMPLES
Customer brings in computer specifically for $50.00 power supply replacement ONLY (with NO diagnostic and NO full repair).
1 to 90 days later the customer states that the computer won't boot to the desktop.
LABOR WARRANTY: If PCR determines that the boot failure is due to a faulty power supply then PCR will replace the faulty power supply at no extra labor charge.
LABOR WARRANTY: If PCR determines that the boot failure is due to a failed power supply AND failed motherboard then the $50 a la carte power supply replacement fee may be CREDITED towards a full diagnostic and repair (plus other optional costs related to data backup or laptop dismantling if applicable).
LABOR WARRANTY: If PCR determines that the boot failure is due to a virus infection then the $50 a la carte power supply replacement fee may be CREDITED towards a full diagnostic and repair (plus other optional costs related to data backup or laptop dismantling if applicable).
PARTS WARRANTY: PCR does not directly offer any parts warranty. Customer parts warranty is the same warranty afforded to PCR by the vendor or manufacturer. If the vendor (or manufacturer) of the power supply provide a replacement FREE of charge then customer pays no charge. If the vendor (or manufacturer) do not cover shipping costs (such as RAM shipping) then the customer must pay these charges. Remember that PCR does not profit off of parts. Repaired parts are billed as "reimbursement". Vendors and manufacturers rarely offer warranties on other parts that may be damaged due to chain reaction (such as failure of power supply to protect the motherboard after a power surge).
Customer brings in computer with a virus infection. PCR performs a full diagnostic + repair, eventually zero wiping the drive, reinstalling Windows and installing Microsoft Security Essentials.
1 to 90 days days later the customer states that the computer is again infected with the same virus.
NO LABOR WARRANTY: PCR's labor warranty does NOT cover virus re-infection after reinstalling Windows, which definitively rebuilds the Windows registry and erases viruses. Zero wiping definitively erases any boot sector viruses.
Customer brings in computer that won't boot to the desktop. PCR performs a full $100 diagnostic + repair, and determines that the hard drive is failing due to failed SMART test. PCR informs the customer that when drives fail they typically fail slowly and the drive may fail at any time. However in hopes of saving money the customer insists that they wish to take a chance by continuing to use the unhealthy drive if the Windows operating system can be repaired. PCR is in fact able to repair the software system back to health.
1 to 90 days days later the customer states that the computer has again failed.
PCR determines that the boot failure is once again due to the same failing hard drive.
NO LABOR WARRANTY: PCR's labor warranty does NOT cover repairs made on failing parts when the customer elects not to replace the failing part.
